Dr. Mark Britt
Mark E. Britt, trombonist, joined the faculty of Furman University as the low brass professor in 1995. He currently serves as the Chairman for the Department of Music, is a coach for the brass chamber music program, teaches music education courses, and has been a featured soloist with both the Furman Wind Ensemble and Furman Symphony Orchestra. He is founder and music director of the Palmetto Posaunen, a professional trombone ensemble. As conductor, chamber musician, or soloist, he Active in the realm of sacred music, Dr. Britt performs regularly at hymn festivals and church music events across the southeast. Most recently he served as the Instrumental Music Director for the 2010 Montreat Conference on Worship and Music sponsored by the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. In the summer of 2003, he participated in the International Chamber Seminar in Telfes, Austria, performing in Munich and Innsbruck. In the fall of 2007 and 2009 he served as study-abroad faculty for Furman University where he taught Music History and Conducting at the Accademia dell’ Arte in Arezzo, Italy. Britt maintains a keen interest in music education and is the College Division President for the SCMEA, served four years as the Teacher Education Chairman for SCMEA, served two terms as the Collegiate Membership Chair for SCMEA, is past-president of the National Collegiate Advisory Board for MENC, as well as a former member of the MENC Southern Division Executive Board. He is an active clinician having appeared at high schools and universities in Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Massachusetts, California, Michigan, and Virginia. Dr. Britt has written or collaborated on articles to BANDWORLD, The Instrumentalist, the North Carolina Music Educators Journal, the International Trombone Journal, the Texas Bandmasters Journal, and Teaching Music. He also served three years as trombone instructor at North Greenville University and in 2007 as the interim tuba professor at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Prior to his appointment at Furman, he served on the faculty of Valdosta State University, Columbus State University, Appalachian State University, and he taught both band and chorus four years in the North Carolina public schools. Britt holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Appalachian State University, the Master of Music in Performance from Northwestern University, and the Doctor of Music in Performance from The Florida State University. His principal teachers have been Harold McKinney, the late Frank Crisafulli (Chicago Symphony) and John Drew. Britt is a member of the International Trombone Association, the Music Educators National Conference, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha, and Kappa Delta Pi. He and his wife Bette, have three wonderful children, Jonathan, Sarah, and Logan.
