COLLEGE DIVISION SESSION

"TIME AND THE EXPERIENCE OF MUSIC"

to be presented by
Mary Reichling
University of Louisiana, Lafayette

College Session and Breakfast
Saturday, February 10, 2006
8:30 - 9:30 am

Abstract: Suzanne Langer holds that music gives us an “auditory apparition of time.” This apparition is actually an illusion of movement that is perceived imaginatively. We hear movement as fast, slow, driving, marching, and so forth. Such movement is projected through time, yet nothing is actually moving. We are not speaking hear of clock time, but rather of something unique that might be labeled “virtual” time. It is a sense, an image of lived-time found in the musical experience. These ideas form the basis for a lively discussion of the nature of time in the experience of music.

About the Presenter: Mary Reichling is Associate Professor of Music and Coordinator for Music Education at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette where she teaches undergraduate and graduate music methods courses, supervises student teachers, and directs students in their research projects. She has served as the National Chair of the Philosophy and Music Education SRIG of MENC and is currently on the editorial board of the journal, Philosophy of Music Education Review. Mary actively pursues philosophical inquiry and has presented and written her findings extensively. In the spring of 2007, she will begin a sabbatical leave to work on a music philosophy book based on Suzanne Langer’s theories.
