SCMEA Conference Details

January 27, 2023 |

We are only one week until SCMEA’s 75th Anniversary Professional Development Conference! I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone at this wonderful celebration! We have an excellent conference scheduled, and you are sure to find something that can help you in your classroom or help to recharge your musical batteries!

Here are some final reminders and updates:

  • We are kicking off our conference with the award-winning acapella group, VOCTAVE, on Thursday @ 2 pm! This is a NEW time for us to start the conference, so I hope you have planned to come to see this fantastic group and help us fill the ballroom! Registration will open at noon at CMCC.
  • Immediately following VOCTAVE, we will move downstairs to our 75th Anniversary celebration with cake and punch for everyone and the grand opening of our exhibits! You don’t want to miss this!
  • We are excited to have Dr. Tim Lautzehizer as our keynote speaker at the general session on Friday @ 10:30 am. This is truly a MUST-SEE session! Dr. Tim will also be doing a breakout session @ 12:30 pm in Ballroom A: Music Educators: Shepherding Tomorrow’s Leaders to Artistry.

Registration/Check-In should be super simple again this year with our quick scan/print kiosks! Please ensure you’re registered before arriving to make this process as fast as possible.

Conference Mobile App

We have made some tweaks since last year and will be using the Expo Pass mobile conference app this year! All registered attendees should receive an e-mail from support@exposent.com with instructions on downloading the app to their mobile devices. In this same e-mail from ExpoPass is a “Magic Link” button, which will open the app and launch you right into your attendee profile. Please open the e-mail from ExpoPass on your mobile device. Additional information is available about the mobile app by clicking here.

The mobile conference app provides opportunities to view the most up-to-date schedule, create your personalized schedule, and explore sessions, materials, and speakers. If you need help with the mobile app, e-mail support@expopass.com or stop by the registration desk and see Ryan Tinker. You can also e-mail him at webmaster@scmea.net.

Need An Official Record of Session Attendance?

Please check in with each session’s presider so they can scan the QR code on your badge. Following the conference, SCMEA will provide attendees (on request) a list of all sessions “added” to their schedule via the mobile app and each session where a badge scan was made. Remember, it will be your responsibility to be scanned into each session to get an accurate printout of your attendance. Here is a sample of the report from last year’s conference.

2023 SCMEA Jazz Social

The 8th Annual Jazz Social will once again be happening featuring The USC Left Bank Jazz Big Band, The SCMEA Directors Big Band, and special guest Mike Steinel on Friday at 8 pm, presented by Pecknel Music & Yamaha.

Due to the huge popularity of this event, we have moved it to the Conference Center in the main ballroom area. Many, many thanks to our Platinum Sponsor Pecknel Music and Yamaha Music, for sponsoring this wonderful night again this year!

We’re on pace to set a new attendance record this year, and registration is still open! If you still have not registered, please go to https://www.scmea.net/conference/

I look forward to seeing you all next week for SCMEA’s 75th Birthday!!

Joe Gulledge
SCMEA President

Staying in town after the conference on Saturday night? The University of South Carolina School of Music has extended a special invitation for SCMEA members for a free concert. USC’s Southern Exposure New Music Series is bringing in award-winning concert pianist Awadagin Pratt. He will be accompanied by the USC Symphony Orchestra and School of Music associate violin professor Ari Streisfeld.
