WHAT'S BRAND NEW:
Teachers, the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) announces the launch of the National Core Arts Standards on June 4th, 2014 at 1:00 – 3:00 PM EDT. Help celebrate the unveiling of standards written for and by arts educators to support quality teaching and learning! Click on this link to register for the virtual unveiling of the standards.
South Carolina will consider the use of these standards in the next revision of the 2010 South Carolina Academic Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts. Until then, arts teachers will still implement the state standards in their classroom. The use of National Core Arts Standards may be considered as a resource when working with our students. In addition, the NCCAS Website will have other resources valuable to teaching the arts.

SCMEA Teacher Evaluation Task Force submits official recommendation
The SCMEA Teacher Evaluation Task Force was chartered in October 2012 to develop a position statement on and recommendation for evaluating music teacher effectiveness using student growth measures. The task force comprised 14 music educators and other arts education professionals representing general, choral, and instrumental music education on elementary through college levels. After several drafts and an extended public comment period, the SCMEA Executive Board unanimously approved the Task Force's position statement and recommendation on May 11, 2013. The recommendation has been forwarded to the South Carolina Department of Education where it has initially received positive consideration.
The Task Force wishes to thank all who contributed comments, questions, and suggestions throughout the development process. We are hopeful that the recommendation will serve as a positive influence in state-level discussions and can serve as a model for other arts education areas in the state.
